All about forklift masts

Having the right mast type for your application and environment is one of the ways to keep productivity high. This guide explains the differences between mast types.

How high do you need to lift?

Lift height

Measure your highest shelf and add another 150–200 mm to the measurement.

The extra space gives the operator additional clearance to lift the load off the rack without dragging goods when loading or unloading shelves.

How low should your collapsed mast height be?

Low doorways

Some applications require driving in and out through doorways. Walk around the facility and measure the door heights so you know the required lowered mast height.

If the trucks also work inside lorries or under canopies, take those measurements into account too.

The importance of free lift

In confined spaces the free lift function is important – it allows the forks to be raised to a certain height while the mast remains lowered.

Single-stage masts

Simplex mast

  • A single mast section with one frame and limited lift height.
  • The maximum mast height remains the same during lifting.
  • A simple solution for applications without great lift heights.

Simplex mono mast

  • Centrally mounted mast.
  • For low lift heights when the operator often works close to the truck, e.g. as a work table.
  • Easy to move around the mast with very low risk of injury.

Two-stage masts

Duplex mast with limited free lift

  • Two sections with two side cylinders.
  • Limited free lift and good visibility of the forks.

Duplex mast with central cylinder

  • Maximum free lift – high lift height with a low mast height.
  • For stacking in halls with low ceilings, in covered lorries and through low doorways.

Duplex mast with side cylinders

  • Optimal visibility for easy and safe fork positioning.
  • Has free lift, useful for low-height applications.

Three-stage masts

Triplex mast with central cylinder

  • Three sections, a central cylinder and maximum free lift for very high lift heights with a low mast height.
  • A higher lift height also gives more free lift.
  • Most common in distribution centres, warehouses and for stacking in covered lorries.

Triplex mast with side cylinders

  • Maximum free lift for high lift heights with a low mast height.
  • Side cylinders give good forward visibility.
