What you need to know about pallets

Pallets are still the most common load carrier for goods transport with forklifts. Learn which sizes and types exist and what to look out for when choosing a truck.

What is a pallet?

A load carrier

A pallet is a flat structure used for shipping and transporting goods, enabling more cost-effective, safer and more ergonomic movement of unit loads.

The pallet as we know it today was developed during the Second World War. It is most often made of wood, plastic or metal, and the choice depends on the load and the environment in which it is used.

A BT invention

The original Euro pallet was developed by BT, SJ (Swedish State Railways) and Gyllsjö Träindustri for transporting goods by rail. The 800 x 1200 mm size is standardised, and the Euro pallet is today the most commonly used pallet in Europe.

Is there a standard pallet size?

It varies from country to country

International standard sizes do not really exist, because pallet definitions, construction standards and terminology vary greatly from country to country. However, national standards and unofficial industry sizes are common.

Not all truck types are compatible with all pallet types – check the pallet dimensions and load size (including overhang) before defining the fork requirements. The weight and content of the load affect the load centre and the residual capacity of the truck needed for stacking.

The most common pallet size in Europe is 1200 x 800 mm.

Most common pallet types

Open pallet (EU, EPAL)

Also known as a Euro pallet or 4-way entry pallet. Block construction with bottom boards on 2 sides and the centre. Easy handling with virtually all truck types. A very common type in Europe.

Bottom boarded pallet (Chep)

Block construction with bottom boards on all 4 sides and the centre. 4-way entry, but stacking with a fork-over-support-arm stacker is not possible.

Stringer pallet

Block and side bearers with fork cut-outs. Low-profile forks are needed to pick up from the bearer side. Common in North America, Africa and Asia.

Bearer pallet

Block construction with side and centre bearers and 2-way entry only. Stacking with a fork-over-support-arm stacker is not possible.
