This guide will help you buy once and buy right: it identifies the most important questions and factors to consider.
You need to know:
The capacity must be greater than the heaviest load, but that is not enough. The actual capacity in your operating conditions is called the residual capacity – the more factors shift the load centre, the lower it is. That is why it is important to calculate the required capacity before buying.
One of the most important choices is between an electric truck and an IC engine truck. Electric trucks have fewer moving parts, so the risk of breakdowns is lower; the higher purchase price is offset by lower energy and maintenance costs. IC engine trucks require no charging and are quickly refuelled – with diesel or LPG.
An IC engine truck is excellent outdoors, even in bad weather, but indoor use is limited: diesel trucks are often not allowed to work indoors, and LPG trucks only with adequate ventilation.
Electric trucks work both indoors and outdoors. Trucks with lead-acid batteries do not run at full capacity at low temperatures and require a charging room, while lithium-ion batteries can be charged anywhere, need no maintenance and perform well in refrigerated areas.
Electric counterbalanced trucks come in three-wheel or four-wheel versions. In confined spaces choose a three-wheel truck; for outdoor work on uneven surfaces a four-wheel truck offers better stability.
Some models have a compact chassis for narrow aisles and a smaller turning radius – check it in the technical data sheet on the model page.
Tyres must suit the surface, and gradeability must suit slopes and ramps. Outdoor work requires a cabin, and indoors it reduces noise.
Electric trucks emit no exhaust gases and are quieter – they are the first choice for indoor work. When buying a new engine-powered truck, check that it meets the Stage V exhaust emission standard.
Tight space, even floor, light to moderate loads: Traigo24 or the compact 3-wheel Traigo48.
Moderate space, even floor, moderate loads: 4-wheel Traigo48 – stability and higher lift heights.
Uneven floor and heavy loads: Traigo80 or Tonero LPG.
Wide space, uneven floor, heavy loads: high-capacity Traigo80 or Tonero.
