Automation – a key trend in logistics

Automation remains the leading investment priority for logistics managers. Hybrid automation, where people and machines collaborate, is the most realistic and scalable model for modern warehouses.

Hybrid warehouses as the new standard

  • Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) – high storage density, predictable throughput and fewer errors: pallet cranes, mini-load systems and robotic cube storage.
  • Robotic picking – AI-based vision and advanced grippers enable reliable picking of diverse items; goods-to-person models optimise the deployment of people.
  • Automated internal transport – autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are increasingly replacing conventional AGVs thanks to flexible navigation.
  • Vehicle loading and unloading – new solutions shorten dock time, increase safety and speed up dispatch.

Humanoid robots are also on the horizon for environments where flexibility and working with existing infrastructure matter – still at an early stage, but showing how automation is expanding towards more general applications.

Trends in Logistics report

“Trends in Logistics” is the annual Toyota Material Handling Europe report providing an overview of developments in logistics, with a focus on Europe. The aim is a better understanding of upcoming changes, so companies can make informed investment decisions and respond to threats in time.

Automation on Toyota's radar

Regardless of the size and type of business, automation can add value – even for small warehouses and manufacturers. Whether you run a logistics centre or a production plant, automating individual processes takes productivity to a new level, step by step or through a complete transformation of large systems.
