Toyota Industries Corporation named on the CDP Climate Change A List 2019
Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) has been named on the A List for the second year in a row. Inclusion on the A List means the highest score in CDP’s climate change research. Toyota Material Handling Europe, with its European material handling division, has completed activities related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and its impact on climate change.
Toyota Material Handling Europe continuously contributes to achieving the goals of Toyota Industries Corporation. One example is the use of carbon-neutral biogas at Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing Sweden in Mjölby, which achieved zero carbon emissions in 2019. This factory is the first of all TICO group factories to achieve this, and Tekniska Verken was named sustainable company of the year for the many initiatives it has launched.
Toyota Material Handling Europe thereby demonstrates how low-carbon technology can be available and accessible to companies and customers who are ready for innovation. Receiving the highest rating for the second year in a row shows that these initiatives are recognised.
“In our 2019 Sustainability Report we reported that CO2 emissions from internal operations (factories and sales companies) in Europe have grown by zero per cent since 2012. At the same time, revenue grew by 54% over the same period, and we continue to work on further reductions. For example, we are 100% committed to buying electricity from renewable sources from 2020 onwards. This will reduce emissions by a further 15%,” says Tom Schalenbourg, Director of Sustainability at Toyota Material Handling Europe.
Toyota Industries’ Sixth Environmental Action Plan
In March 2016 the Toyota Industries Group formulated its “Ideal State in 2050” and brought together its activities over the five years from FY2017 to FY2021 in its “Sixth Environmental Action Plan”, which it is currently implementing. The company is pursuing the following initiatives based on this plan:
1. Reducing CO2 emissions by 10% in FY2021 compared with FY2006 (Toyota Industries)
2. Reducing the CO2 emission basic unit by 26% in FY2021 compared with FY2006 (Toyota Industries Group)
3. Understanding and reducing water-related risks at each production site
In the future, the Toyota Industries Group will continue to respond to climate change as a key issue. In addition, the company will contribute to a sustainable society through global environmental activities. CDP results were officially announced on 20 January at the CDP 2019 Japan presentation. More detailed information can be found in the Toyota Industries Corporation press release.
